Cookies for Everyone

Today I am so excited to announce that I wrote a book called Cookies for Everyone, and you can preorder it now! It will be released on November 5, 2019. This has been a secret project for the past year, and I am finally able to share details with you! Lots of you have been asking when I would share certain recipes, such as French macarons, Florentines, Best Friend Ever Cookies… Well, the time has finally come because they are all in this book! There are 100 recipes to bake the perfect cookie for you, or for someone you love. Every single recipe in the book can be made gluten free, baked at high altitude or at sea level with just one quick switch. Whether you love butter, are gluten free or vegan, live at high altitude or at sea level - I got you covered. Yes, all in one book! You can even bake cookies for your fur babies with my Dog Cookie recipe as well. There truly is a cooke in this book for everyone. You can preorder here by clicking on one of the links on my book page. After the book is released, I will have them for sale in the bake shop.

So, I’ve read a lot of people’s blog reveals about their first cookbooks. They all seem to start with “I was approached by (insert publisher’s name here) and they asked me to write a book!” Well, I will be the first to tell you that’s not how it usually works. Maybe for some people that is the honest truth and they never even pitched their book, but those people are very lucky. Publishers are getting pitched tons of books on the daily. And the publishing world is very competitive because there are so many talented people out there that can bake, photograph, and write. It’s a lot of work to get your book published, and that’s no joke. So, I’m not going to make this seem like this was easy peasy because it definitely was not, but it was totally worth it and so much fun!

So let’s back up a little bit, because some of you may be saying - but this isn’t your first book Mimi. Back when we were known as Mimi’s Cookie Bar, people were constantly asking for recipes. So a recipe book was something that came to mind. I was thinking of it more as marketing material than anything else. So, I wrote two cookbooks (one with regular cookies and one with vegan and gluten free desserts). Delaney designed them and we got them printed. Because when you own a design firm (like we do with Above 8000 Creative), it’s pretty easy to do that kind of thing yourself. I never thought I’d fall in love with putting my recipes into something tangible, and sharing them with people. But, I did. I also didn’t think that people would want to buy them, but they did! So, thank you! With the name change from Mimi’s Cookie Bar to Dessert’D Organic Bake Shop, also came getting rid of all promotional and marketing materials with Mimi’s Cookie Bar on them, and we stopped printing the books. Those of you that have them, they’re now vintage.

This was also right about the time I started working with an agent. Because I googled how to get a book published, and it said the first step is finding a literary agent. Well, of course. So I sent out some emails, to be more specific - A LOT of emails. I got a lot of rejections. I got a lot of people who didn’t understand my point of view or how what I was doing was different, saying that organic baking is the same as regular baking - which I completely disagree, obviously. Organic baking is using minimal and organic ingredients, not taking shortcuts and staying away from artificial ingredients and colors. Also people didn’t seem to care that I had high altitude baking knowledge - which is so rare! I got a little bit of interest from some agents and I spoke with a few of them. But, when I got an email back from a woman named Clare, I just had a feeling. We talked on the phone and decided to work together that week, and she has been fighting for me ever since. There were ups and lots of downs, and after a while I just expected her emails to say “sorry, they passed”. If you don’t take rejection well - don’t be an author, I’ll just say that. It’s probably similar to being an actor, it’s very subjective and there’s lots of talent everywhere. It’s about finding the right person to give you the chance to show them what you can do. Good thing I don’t give up easily (neither does Clare), and I don’t take things too personally.

I’ve come to realize that timing is everything. Sometimes you’re not ready for what you want and the universe knows that, even if you don’t. All this was going on during a super stressful time with our name change, and I think the universe knew that. Once our name change took place, other things started to fall into place - this being just one of them. I’m glad I didn’t sign a book deal and write a book with the name Mimi’s Cookie Bar all over it, and my publisher and agent are also glad that didn’t happen. So, this was just meant to be. And I wouldn’t have been able to get here without Clare and all her persistence, now we’re finally seeing both of our hard work pay off and I couldn’t be more happy.

So while it took some time and a lot of work, I did get my first real book deal and it couldn’t have been for a more perfect book for me. I am so thankful for Da Capo/Lifelong Books, my publisher, for choosing to pick me and publish Cookies for Everyone. This book pretty much has all my favorite recipes in it. I will forever love cookies before anything else. It’s what I founded my business on, and what I look forward to baking and of course eating every single day. I hope you will preorder my book (here), and I cannot wait to see what you choose to bake from it!
