Orange Mango Banana Smoothies with Real Coco

Delaney came home from Costco last trip with a case of Real Coco Coconut Water. Not all coconut water is created equal so we are always looking for new coconut water that we like, so we try them all. And... this one did not disappoint! Coconut is one of my absolute favorite ingredients and flavors. I like to think I have a pretty good palette and I know when coconut products are good or bad. And let me say, Real Coco is good!

I hadn't ever heard of the brand before our latest Costco discovery, so I wanted to know more. What else do they have? How long have they been around? Why is it so good? I reached out to Real Coco and talked to one of the owners, Jeffrey. He shares some of their story below.

I know everyone is on a healthy kick right now (January), and there's nothing like a coconut water for a little sweetness in a healthy way. It's one of the reasons I love coconut water! It's good for you and it's delicious so it makes me feel like I have a treat. It's my favorite after workout drink, I just want something cold and delicious drink, or I'm feeling dehydrated drink - coconut water cures all. So I created a recipe for a healthy smoothie using Real Coco. I have been making this Orange Mango Banana Smoothie all month long and it's so good. Get the recipe below.

Mimi: Tell me the story of how Real Coco started?

Jeffrey: Brian and I started Real Coco in 2013. We both lived between the USA and Asia. We were super excited to see the coconut craze finally hit the USA. After trying everything on the market, we were never able to find a coconut water that captured what we were drinking on the beaches of Thailand and Vietnam. So we decided to start Real Coco and begin our search to find the best coconuts in the world. We literally flew to over 6 countries and 30 factories to finally find the best coconuts in Vietnam. Because we had such a good raw material, we then began to develop other coconut products like our milk and creamers.

M: How long has Real Coco been in business?

J: About 7 years.

M: You say coconut is the most sustainable plant based food, can you tell me more about that?

J: Growing coconuts doesn’t require pesticides or herbicides, and coconuts are harvested by hand, instead of by a giant tractor. Coconuts are native to Southeast Asia and are irrigated by natural rain. Our coconut farms are all family owned and can be harvested 2 times a year without the need to re-plant the trees.

M: What do you do differently than most coconut farms?

J: Our bottling facilities support our local farmers by paying a 5% premium over market prices as well as run educational programs teaching farmers how optimize the use of their coconut groves. This includes programs to optimize soil and build strategic irrigation channels to maximize the use of the farmers land. Over the recent years, farmers have seen an increase in demand and output for their coconuts leading to a better sustainable life.

M: What was your first product?

J: Real Coco Original Coconut Water

M: How many products do you have now?

J: We have five:

Real Coco Organic Nam Hom Coconut Water

Real Coco Organic Coconut Water

Real Coco Organic Coconut Milk

Real Coco Organic Coconut Creamers

Real Coco Coconut Chips (Original, Chocolate, Thai Chili, Caramel)

M: What is your favorite product?

J: Tough one… But I love our creamers.

M: What is your favorite way to enjoy coconut?

J: Machete cut on a beach, but our Nam Hom is really close!
